Red Thread Theatre’s mission is to present productions of the highest quality in direction, performance and design. We aspire to expand the horizons of audiences and artists alike, thus enriching our community through the art of theatre.
Red Thread Theatre (RTT) was formed in response to the historical under-representation of female theatre artists in our community. Our primary focus is on fostering creative development and providing leadership opportunities for female theatre artists in design, direction, playwriting and performance.
It was not the intent to form a traditional “women’s company” in any exclusionary sense, but a “company run by women.” We look forward to working with the finest actors, directors, designers and playwrights both female and male. We are seeking to identify works that showcase fully developed female characters, and that address issues that are of interest to women.
Our fundamental goal is expressed in the quotation, “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.” This quotation inspired our name, and relates to our interest in plays that focus on the influential and enduring relationships between women, and the men in their lives and families.
Red Thread Theatre is committed to producing a wide variety of classical and contemporary works, while adding to the diversity of Western New York’s theatre community.
RTT activities began informally in 2009. We incorporated in 2011 and became a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 2014.
