ABOUT THE THEATRE ALLIANCE of BUFFALO

Founded September 2004, in an unprecedented and groundbreaking partnership, sixteen professional producing theatres from Western New York came together to create (originally named) The Buffalo Theatre Alliance (TBTA).

The Theatre Alliance of Buffalo is a collection of WNY’s finest theatre groups working together as one to provide market awareness and support for the regions theatrical productions.

Since its inception, the Theatre Alliance of Buffalo (TAB) has now grown to 20 member theatre groups governed by by-laws and elected officials. Regular monthly meetings and committee meetings are held and a shared patron database of over 75,000 contacts has been created, allowing for a multitude of cross marketing initiatives to take place.

In May 2010, the first annual General Student Audition initiative was launched which represented a majority of the theatre companies in Buffalo. This program obviated the need for individual students to make separate auditions at a whole range of theatre companies and provided students with an opportunity to be seen by more than 25 professional theatre directors at a single audition. The idea of establishing Student General Auditions is to grow the event to General Audition that will include professional auditions and attract talent from neighboring theatre communities including Rochester, Syracuse, New York, Cleveland and Canada.

In May 2011, GENERAL AUDITIONS for (non-student) professional actors was added to the program attracting talent from the Ontario, Syracuse and Rochester areas. The introduction of this new annual theatre event invigorated not only the talent pool in Western New York, but the TAB membership as well, garnering much recognition and praise within the theatre community.

Theatre Alliance of Buffalo is a presence at festivals (e.g. Elmwood Avenue Festival of Arts) promoting all members’ shows through distribution of individual members’ flyers, brochures and the TAB season schedule -- making it a one stop shop for festival  goers seeking theatre information while streamlining related festival costs and volunteer manpower.

Information on TAB’s initiatives are disseminated through press release distribution, monthly email campaigns, social networking, shared playbill page, season flyer, and the TAB website. TAB’s model has encouraged other collaborative efforts in the region to explore joint initiatives. The Greater Buffalo Cultural Alliance (GBCA) is one such example of TAB’s seminal influence. Key TAB members were influential in the formation of GBCA and are currently active on the Leadership in the Steering Committees of GBCA.

In only two years, TAB’s dedicated website has become the # 1 online referral hub and clearing house for Buffalo Theatre. The measuring of TAB’s website is supported by Google analytics and through research of other member’s website analytics.

TAB and the CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) are currently creating a video project to profile the theatre community in Western New York. The video project is now in the production and filming stage.  The 5-minute website video will be launched at the 30th Anniversary Curtain Up 2011, a city-wide theatre event that celebrates the opening of the theatre season in greater Buffalo.
